We were thrilled when we first spoke to Brandon and Doris and they expressed a desire to have a non-traditional wedding. Instead of a typical sit-down banquet-style reception, D&B wanted a cocktail party, a point of difference oozing the glamour of a Manhattan rooftop party in the heart of Melbourne.
Their wish list included:
* a city vibe
* lots of food
* various different serving stations
* less formalities and more of a party vibe
* a live band
* lounging areas
* lounge areas
* a grand entrance
* and of course a wow factor
Overall they wanted to create a new and unique experience for their guests, something less traditional, focusing on style, celebration and love.
“But…” they said, “we have lots of family and elderly guests on the day and we’re not sure if this is okay?” Given their Vietnamese background our challenge was to find the right balance. We needed to maintain traditions & cultural expectations whilst adding in modern elements and the couple’s personal flair. We delightfully accepted the challenge and in the five months working remotely with our gorgeous couple, as they lived interstate, we were so pleased with what we were able to create and execute on that beautiful spring day in mid October.
This rooftop cocktail wedding is one of our favourite events from this year. Our modern couple chose one of Melbourne’s most notable rooftop venues for their ceremony and reception, Luminare in South Melbourne. This Manhattan inspired rooftop venue oozes a chic, modern vibe and is fitted out with stylish furnishings. And of course the catering, by The Big Group was a big tick for D&B. Luminare was the perfect canvas to bring our client’s vision of a “stylish supper-club” to life.
D&B’s colour palette included modern pastels of blush and pops of deep pink utilising flowers such as phalaenopsis, anthurium and roses contrasting with deep green foliage. We incorporated hints of gold to give accent to our modern styling brief. We wanted to create striking textures and elegance. Strong bold colours of black, velvet, navy and emerald were used throughout the cocktail space to furnish three dedicated lounge areas for guests as well as an intimate bridal lounge for our couple. To top it off. Hundreds of meters of sparkling black tassels were brought in and hung from the ceiling to create a grand entrance. An abstract illusion of a city laneway, with emerald up-lighting to bounce lights. A true spectacle and wow-factor for our couple.
In the middle of the room proudly stood a central bar with adorned with an overhead installation of delicate round pendant light globes. Lastly, the highlight of our style vision was the bridal lounge we created just for D&B. A smooth black velvet lounge suite set a-front a custom backdrop of black metal mesh that featured a cascading floral installation, a neon “Happily ever after” sign, and overhead pendant light globes to finish. An intimate and beautiful space just for the couple to sit and have some precious moments together.
Styling aside, we were forced to commence with our plan B for the ceremony. D&B wanted to have the ceremony on Luminare’s stunning outdoor deck overlooking the Melbourne skyline. However, in true Melbourne form, rain was falling intermittently throughout the day and was showing no signs of clearing. After relocating the ceremony arch twice and weighing up whether the deck ceremony was a viable option, we made the call to to execute our wet weather plan and bring everything inside. This was no easy feat, not only did it require the drying and relocating of 50 ceremony chairs at the eleventh hour, we had to utilise our reception space and temporarily up-heave all of the cocktail set up to accomodate the ceremony.
As the guests arrived, it was picture perfect. No one even questioned the indoor ceremony, it flowed as if it were destined from the beginning! Most importantly D&B were absolutely amazed with how we recreated their ceremony space and loved the intimacy of the indoor ceremony. We were so lucky to have great such support and efforts from our suppliers and the team at Luminare. It was a team effort that was a job truely well done! Melbourne weather – 0. Pink Stardust – 1.
Once the ceremony concluded, we had a quick few minutes during the group photos to swiftly pack down the ceremony set-up and reset the entire reception space, opening it back up and promptly replacing each styling element back to its original place.
The guests were then welcomed back inside for the commencement of the cocktail reception. And boy did the party begin! Salacious entertained all night long with their 7 piece live band and the guests danced the night away on the black sheen monogrammed dance floor. Guests enjoyed 12 courses of canapes, there was a cheese & charcuterie station, a seafood station, grill station, outdoor whiskey bar, ice cream cart and the central bar mixing up spirits and cocktails. Everything you could imagine was on offer! The night exploded with laughter when the gorgeous MC & Celebrity Comedian Diana Nguyen brought the house down with her hilarious comedy segment.
It was the longest day for our team, from 9am until 1am bump out, but we’d do it all over again if we could. In the couple’s words, “such an amazing night…thanks for everything. Everyone loved last night!”. To plan and design this wedding was one of the best opportunities and experiences for us, and we couldn’t have done it without the following amazing support from:
